Bharti Airtel 3g launch

BANGALORE: Bharti Airtel on Monday rolled out 3G services in Karnataka, where it has its largest customer and revenue base, and said the service would be launched across all 13 telecom circles licenced to the provider by March 2011.

3G services offer high speed internet access on your mobile to utility services like m-commerce, health and education, and other services like video viewing, video calls, live TV and live streaming.

Addressing the media here on Monday, company president (mobile services) Atul Mohan Bindal said Airtel is exploring collaborations with other players to establish a countrywide footprint. "We expect 3G to have a significant impact on our data ARPUs (average revenue per user),'' said Bindal.

Responding to a query on pricing, Bindal said the real differenciator in 3G would be speed and technology and not pricing. However, Bindal said that to insulate customers from "bill shocks'', which is common in 3G, Airtel has designed an easy tariff structure with personalized data usage limits and usage alerts.

Once a usage limit is reached, the speed begins to slow down to warn the user that he is exceeding his capacities, and then give him the choice to upgrade again. Users can also buy plans with time rather than data limits. There are sachet plans for small users.

Tata Docomo launched 3G services in November. Vodafone is expected to launch it next month. BSNL and MTNL were the earliest to launch these services but their impact has been limited. "These public sector players have failed to create customer awareness about the benefit of 3G. Also, 90% of their subscribers are in rural India, where basic handsets are used,'' said Baburajan K, executive editor of technology publication Voice & Data.

the 3g services launched in Bangalore , Coimbatore , Chennai and yet to be launched in othen cities
